Moon Sand - Potentially Deadly

A recent post on Delphi has prompted me to write this cautionary article.

The Moon Sand (sold by Toys R Us) may or may not be problematic from a corn standpoint, but its best to be cautious.

The mother who posted describes severe allergic reactions to the Moon Sand in all three of her daughters. The two youngest daughters are both allergic to corn. The allergies of the oldest are currently unknown.

Her youngest (2 yr old) touched the sand for under 2 minutes before reacting. Her middle child touched it for 15 minutes, then showed signs of allergic reaction (behaviors known to be associated with allergic reactions in this child) which resulted in a mild anaphylaxis 4 hours later. The time frame of reactivity for the oldest was not given.

Please use caution if you're thinking of using this product with allergenic children.

I am not corn allergic (by any means) but I do have skin allergies to many scented soaps and lotions, and to cats and dogs, and also, it turns out, to moon sand. The kids got it for Christmas, and after I cleaned it up I had hives on my hands and neck, and then I forgot. Today, same thing. I came across your link because I am trying to identify the ingredients, thought I would add my data to your analysis. Good luck.

I too was looking for info on Moon Sand. My son and I played with Moon Sand for the first time yesterday and I instantly broke out with hives on my face and neck. I do not have food allergies but do have other inside and outside allergies.

My 3 year old broke out after playing with moon sand. She had it stuck to her legs and now her legs are covered with welts. She has had them for a couple of days now. Benadryl doesn't help at all. They need to pull this stuff.

My son is 6 and he had been asking for moonsand for awhile, so finally I bought it for him last week. After he had play with the moonsand he too had problems, his hands turned really red. Then soon after he got blisters all over both of his hands some were almost as big as quarters so I rushed him to the doctor. Our peditrician said that it was a chemical burn from the moonsand and he had to wear bandages covering both hands for 4 days. We thought at first he was allergic to it however he is not allergic to anything and has played in sand at the lake to bounch of times. The box said its non-toxic, yea ok!! I called the company and their response was "we'll send fed-x to your house to pick it all up and we will send him a new toy"!!

My 3 year old daughter asked for moon sand from santa this year. And she got it and now shes covered from head to toe with a rash, welts and her hands swelled up pretty bad from it. I put it aside, but today she got hold of it, so we had to take her to the doctor for medication. Now Ive a hard job to tell her santa has to take it back because it gives her a rash. And the worst thing is it was the only toy she asked for.

My 3 year old got moon sand for christmas. Within minutes of touching it she broke out in a horrible rash, raw looking red skin, welts and her hands swelled up pretty bad to. I put it aside but she got hold of it again today, she is covered from head to toe in this rash, we had to take her to the doctor. He said allergic reaction and gave her medicine but no improvement as of yet. Now I have to dump it and try explain, awkward cos santa brought it for her and it was the only toy she asked for.

My seven year old daughter has had a rash on her entire face for two days straight. As another parent posted, benedryl does absolutely nothing to calm the redness or swelling. She is very scared and worried her face will stay swollen. We have an appointment to see the doctor today. This stuff is horrendous.

Thanks for posting this. My son was recently diagnosed with a severe corn allergy (among many others) We let him play with moon sand and I realized it caused a mild reaction in him too. (I only let him play with it for a short while and make him wash his hands really well afterwards so I think that helped.

I really enjoy your blog and I hope you don't mind I put a link to it from mine. cornfreeeat.blogspot.com

My daughter is not allergic to corn however she got some moon sand from my sister and after playing with it broke out in a severe blistery rash in some areas it even swelled. It has been 3 days and the rash has now turned into more of a chemical burn. I couldnt believe how bad she broke out.

I keep hearing about moon sand but what about Magic Sand? My daughter had a severe allergic reaction yesterday but we were unsure about it's source...however one of those sources we had considered was the Magic Sand. Today, she had another allergic reaction and again It happened after she played with Magic Sand. Does anybody have any further information on this product and it's possibility of being a skin irritant?

my daughter was playing with the sand and instantly broke out in a terrible blistry itchy rash then projectile vomited for a few minutes. we called 911 and her vitals were fine then took her to urgent care and they suggested an antihistamine. Please don't let your children play with this stuff...this was by grinstudios.com and called moving sand but ours is labeled blizzard sand. very scary stuff!
